How did this happen?

When the compulsory employer contribution scheme was introduced in 1992, it contained a flaw that allowed the same person to hold multiple accounts. This has resulted in the loss of $18 billion worth of super.

Stop paying multiple fees

Once a super account goes dormant, it will normally decline in value due to fees. If you hold multiple funds, then you’re paying multiple fees and insurance premiums, reducing your retirement savings.

Find your money

After five years, the ATO takes control of these accounts. This has resulted in billions of dollars in unclaimed super being held by the ATO and by superannuation funds. Some of this money could be yours.

Multiple missing accounts

The average Australian has four super accounts and $750 in lost super. Your share could be higher or lower than this, depending on your employment history.

You May Have Lost Super if:

You've changed jobs

When you change jobs, quite often your new employer will either select their own default fund or you may simply have forgotten to specify your existing one.

Have been married or changed your name

If you’ve ever been married or changed your name you may forget to tell your superfund about it.

Changed address

When you change your address your superfund's correspondence will often go undelivered and eventually be forgotten about.
